Afro Beats. A'fro Everything

Afro Beats. A'fro Everything

Warm weather, bright blue skies and fresh air are not only a sign of summer but clear indication that Music festival season is upon us!!! It is an ushering into spaces that can stimulate your senses, with adrenaline coursing through your veins, as you groove to the music swaying your hands like you don't care!! Personally I have had some of the greatest times of my life at musical festivals which I deem to be the crowning jewel of any summer pastime activity.

If you've been observant- you'd notice more than just the blooming flowers but also a rich distinct sound that is going off everywhere. I am talking about a genre called Afrobeats, Afro-pop or Afro-fusion - an umbrella term used to describe a popular music coming out of West Africa. This genre of music features jovial, rhythmic tunes with lyrics sung mostly in pidgin languages in a distinct style that is attracting global appeal. Here we will present a quick rundown of the must-knows enabling the rise of Afrobeat live festivals: Streaming Platforms Accessibility, discovery and truly personalized listening experiences - are all key elements global music streaming platforms offer to users.

Digital audiences are trooping in their numbers to Spotify & their likes to discover new music genres or indulge in familiar sounds. Streaming platforms allow for greater exposure of expressive, rhythmic and addictive sounds like Afrobeat. New discovery of enticing sounds spurs curiosity. The more a wider array of fans & listeners fall under the musical charm of this vibrant African work of art, an economically viable market for Afrobeats festivals opens up.

Pride & Identity

Increase in migration patterns by black immigrants from Africa to the west can also help explain the rise of Afrobeats Festival. As of 2022 people from Africa account for 42% of the total foreign-born Black population, a significant increase from 2000 when that share was 23% according to the Pew Research Center. We are proud of their origin and can also straddle multiple music genres. This pride in our roots is evident through our liking for music from our fellow countrymen. It is an artistic expression that provides a strong connection to back home, an avenue to come together in community to celebrate our roots.

On this note it is no surprise to see people of African descent at events or gatherings centred around Afrobeats. A lot of Africans in these cities have been craving for their own music they could relate with and showcase. They display it openly as a form of identity, and community making for a wildfire spread. Players in the music business are taking note and increasingly acknowledging the music genre as a money maker. Now there are capitalist inclinations and an increasing interest in Afrobeats.

Everyone Welcome

The crossover appeal in afrobeat music is catching more than just the ears of fans. It is also drawing the attention of the "who-is-who" in the musical touring space. Live performances provide an important avenue for artists to tap into their burgeoning digital fan base and cash in. Enter keyplayer like tour promoters who are a key part of such intentions. Now there are a handful of agents who are on the ready identifying and servicing the increasing demand for Afrobeats festivals in top musical markets. It is a mutually beneficial relationship with the potential to grow bigger. Artists establish a significant audience, these keyplayer present their crucial network plus expertise in planning and execution. While converting the majority of Afrobeat listeners to ticket sales will take time, early positioning is crucial for market share and relevance in the future. Afrobeats is making a significant mark on the musical landscape and its significance is only going to grow. Festivals are a golden opportunity for fans to experience multi-genres of Afrobeat artists and their music. With more and more ears finding the rhythmic intoxicating tunes from West Africa worthy of listening, the more Afrobeats festivals we will see.

And of course as is our way, we leave you with some final words of hair wisdom If you are a regular fest goer then you'd know that there are functional must-haves such as sunscreen- skin; sunglasses- eyes; you must check off your fest-list. Also, if you want to flip-your-hair-like-you-don't-care while having the time of your life, you also need to ensure that you don't have to contend with a bad hair day the next morning. Here are some of the concert worthy ways to style your hair for the next Afrobeats Festival.

Dreadlock ponytail: a great way to tie and style your hair while looking cool, loc'd and ready to rock!!

Space Buns: a wise choice if you are spotting long Braids. The buns keep your hair up and out of your face

Waves and Curls: if you've got naturally curly hair you can as well flaunt it. Quick refreshes are perfect because you just let your hair flow and grab attention while at it. Plus they are also easy. All you need is to wash and go while your hair air dry as you dance.

Aerated Face Cap: that's right. It provides a barrier to the harsh sunshine especially if it is an open air arena. Make sure the cap is airy so your hair can receive the air it deserves.

And most importantly have fun! See you out there.
